The Niagara Falls Fire Department protects a population of 56,000 residents and between 12-14 million visitors per year. Our territory covers approximately 17 square miles of mixed properties including residential, industrial, municipal and county buildings. We are bordered by the Niagara River on two sides, consisting of the “upper” and “lower” river. The upper river provides our department with opportunities for swift water rescues and public safety concerns pertaining to suicides. The lower river provides us with high angle gorge rescues and wildland fire potential.
The NFFD is also certified to respond to all medical emergencies experienced by our residents and visitors to Niagara Falls. In addition, we respond to auto extrications, accidents, fires of every kind and general assistance calls. The NFFD responds an average of more than 4,000 calls per year.
We have a 135 person department commanded by a Fire Chief who is appointed by the Mayor. The Fire Chief is Richard L. Horn, a 25 year veteran of the Department. He is assisted by two civilian staff people and the balance are all fire personnel. We have a seven person Fire Prevention Bureau and a one person Fire Training Department. Our apparatus is maintained by two NFFD mechanics who also act as the liaison for new equipment purchases.
The NFFD members are represented by two unions; one designated for Fire Fighters and one for Fire Officers. All members of the Fire Department are highly regarded as community service advocates and repeatedly assist in the City when needed. Most notably, the NFFD membership sponsors, organizes, and coordinates all of the efforts in conjunction with the Firefighters Christmas Toy Fund. They conduct a telethon each year, securing donations from the overwhelming support of individuals and businesses in Niagara Falls and the surrounding community. They then use 100% of the funds generated to help the less fortunate people in the community. In addition, they put on a great Christmas Party and Dinner for all area elderly residents of Nursing Homes. Finally, they provide assistance to families who are the victims of fire or other disasters.
The Niagara Falls Fire Department members are community activists, helpful throughout the area and committed to job performance, all at the same time. They truly do “protect life and property” on and off duty.
